After a highly successful launch of mini-polo, Dorset Water Polo is continuing the development of the sport having formed five separate leagues since September 2005. With the full support of Dorset County ASA, the sport has shown tremendous development in the County. From a low base of 34/40 players we now have around 400 players competing at various levels. The emphasis has been on fun but the youngsters have certainly learned a lot from playing a team game with associated required ball skills.

What is Mini Polo?

Mini Polo is a smaller, more basic game than Water Polo itself and has been introduced to teach young players the fundamentals of the full game. The best thing about Mini Polo is its wide adaptability. You can play in any size of pool, whether deep or shallow, with any number of boys and girls of different ages, abilities and sizes and change the game to suit your requirements. You can play across the pool or down its length. To get started you don’t even need all the equipment as just a small waterproof ball and some floats or plastic bottles filled with water will do.

The Future

We have adopted rules to suit the level of swimmers in each of our leagues:

  • Key Stage 2 children (8-11 years of age)
  • Key Stage 3 children (12-14 years of age)

Active Sports has already purchased a number of full Mini Polo kits (goals, hats and balls) and installed them around the County. It is hoped that we will be able to expand on this and provide equipment in each centre where the game is played.
